TRAINING SEMINAR FOR FRENCH-SPEAKING BOOKSELLERS MAY 27 - JUNE 14, IN PARIS

This training seminar, organised jointly by the BIEF and the CNL, takes place from May 27 to June 14, 2013 in Paris. It is designed for booksellers operating outside French territory, essentially in non-French-speaking countries, who are in charge of French-language bookshops or sections selling French-language books in international bookshops. Also, under certain conditions, those planning to open a French-language bookshop may be eligible for the seminar.

PROGRAMME

The seminar takes place in France over a period of 3 weeks. It begins with a 3-day introductory module, then 2 weeks’ practical experience during which participants consolidate their acquisitions in a French bookshop, and finally, a 3-day ‘summing-up’ module.

Introduction: 27 - 29 May

  • presentation of the programme and the objectives
  • presentation of booksellers (career and bookshops)
  • French publishers and booksellers speak about the economy of the book and bookshops in France and today’s editorial offer
  • representatives of public institutions speak about support programmes for the book and bookshops in France and abroad
  • information from representatives of the French Syndicat de la librairie and booksellers’ associations
  • information from representatives of institutions related to booksellers operating abroad (CNL, BIEF, Centrale de l’édition, AILF...)
  • visits to bookshops, the BNF and/or the Centre Pompidou library...
  • meeting with an author who regularly participates in bookshop events

Practical experience in a French bookshop: May 30 to June 11

  • The choice of bookshop will be made according to the guest bookseller’s profile.
  • The objectives of this two-week practical course will be established in advance with the person in charge of the bookshop, in liaison with the guest bookseller.

Summing-up: June 12 to 14

  • assembling what the various participants have learned
  • reflection on themes specific to the profession of French bookseller abroad

THE APPLICATION DOSSIER

Dossiers should include:

  • the application form duly completed
  • all the documents requested in the application form

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • candidates must speak French
  • occupy a post of responsibility in a bookshop
  • have experience or training as a bookseller

SUBMISSION OF DOSSIERS

Two complete copies of the dossier with all the adjoining documents must be sent by November 30, 2012:

  • for treatment, to the Centre national du livre
  • for an opinion, to the cultural department of the French Embassy of the country where the bookseller operates

EXPENSES

  • the teaching fees are paid by the BIEF
  • expenses related to the stay in France are paid by the CNL. They are limited to 2000€ for the entire stay (including travelling costs)
  • The stay lasts 3 weeks in all

ATTRIBUTION CRITERIA

Application dossiers are examined by the ‘French bookshops abroad’ commission which is made up of representatives of the administrations concerned, professional booksellers and other qualified members.

In view of the opinions given by the commission, decisions of attribution, refusal or adjournment are taken by the President of the CNL.

PAYMENT DETAILS

Costs related to the stay are paid to the beneficiaries by bank transfer before their departure.
